Slave to Beauty: Missandei

Missandei is Dany’s lovely translator and servant, taken into service after she and thousands of Unsullied were freed from slave trader/nipple-slicer (ew) Kraznys mo Nakloz in Astapor. She’s super smart and speaks a bunch of cool languages including High Valeryan and Dothraki, but originally comes from the island of Naath. I’m always admiring Missandei’s gorgeous curls and smooth bronzed skin. What are her secrets?!

The Naathi are basically the hippies of the Realm, known to be peace-loving fruit eaters, so it comes as no surprise that Missandei would keep her skin clean with a vegan, Piña Colada-scented Pineapple Grunt soap! This refreshing bar is made with chunks of organic pineapple and vetivert for an exotic shower. This is a Lush online-exclusive, so you won’t find it in stores.

Now that winter is coming (hehe), keep skin moisturized and soft with an exfoliating treatment like Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish. The sugar crystals buff away dead skin cells, while oils keep dryness at bay and keep skin supple. While this stuff is great, smart girls can easily save some coppers by making a DIY version of this effective sugar scrub by mixing brown sugar with jojoba, sweet almond, apricot kernel and evening primrose oil. Add a few drops of citrus & peppermint essential oil or whatever scent you desire for an invigorating scent. Warning: be cautious when using this in the shower because it would really suck if you slipped and broke your neck (although entirely possible if it was up to GRRM).

After cleansing and polishing, add some shimmer to your skin with Too Faced Royal Oil Coconut Oil Body Bronzer. The bronzing liquid contains coconut and mangosteen oil to nourish and hydrate skin without streaking or transferring to your sandsilks. Perfect for a pretty glow on all skin tones.

To accentuate your eyes like Missandei’s molten gold-colored ones, dust some MAC Eyeshadow in Goldmine on your lids. Just a touch of this highly pigmented gold dust on the inner corners of your eyes will brighten up your whole look.

For Missy’s great brows, keep them in place with Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel. This is like the destrier of brow gels (okay, I made that up) and a bit pricey for some goop that conditions and sets your eyebrows, but they do add some color and definition.

I don’t know about you but I really love translucent lipsticks. DuWop made some great ones including this amber with gold sparkle ‘Caribbean IcedTea‘, which seems like a fine choice for an island child like Missandei. They’re obviously not pigmented at all and go on more like a gloss/balm hybrid than a lipstick, perfect for summer days when you want to keep it simple. Pictured is Butter Rum, but there’s also Mint Mojito and Ruby Grapefruit in the collection that both look delicious.

My new thing for hair is organic extra virgin coconut oil. I smother my locks with this stuff, sleep on it (wear a shower cap if you don’t want to grease up your pillowcase), wash it out in the morning, and voilà: shiny, moisturized (non-greasy!) hair. It’s great for all hair types, especially curls that tend to be dryer, but my hair is stick-straight and it works for me too. I use Royal Green coconut oil for cooking but you can use whatever brand at your local health food store for this. To add extra benefits not just for your hair, put a small spoonful in your tea.

Last but not least, Gucci by Gucci smells like my idea of Naath: an exotic blend of florals (chypre, Tahitian tiare, patchouli) and fruits (guava, pear), paired with musk and honey.
